Recommend a Movie

HELP!! I have a good amount in gift cards burning a hole in my pocket. Please recommend a movie for me to purchase at Best Buy. I have a fairly eclectic movie selection already so I am ready for any and all suggestions. These are the movies I received for Christmas this year.

Rififi
Raging Bull
Double Indemnity
The Killing
The Darjeeling Limited

Here are some more helping hints.

If you have peiced together the name of this blog, and my screen name, you may have realized I am a fan of Wes Anderson, I have seen, and aside from Bottle Rocket, own all of his movies. Something from the next Wes Anderson, or from one of his inspirations might be a good choice.

I am a sucker for epics. Braveheart, Bridge on the River Kwai, Appocalypse Now, Lawrence of Arabia. I enjoy them all. I am willing to sit through an epic.

Something from Japan. I already have Seven Samuarai in my basket at BestBuy.com. I love it. I also really enjoyed the Hidden Fortress. I also thought Battle Royale was great. Two different movies, but came from, the same place. Hey, I even like Lost in Translation.

I have also gotten into Noir films, since I saw Brick.

I love a good heist movie.

Any 80's movie that has a Unicorn in it.

It may even lead to you getting a shout out on this very blog.

So comment away, let me know what to buy.

I can't remember what I've already recommended to you and I'm not sure what you've already seen, but!

1. Wonderfalls... it's not a movie but a kick-ass tv show that was on Fox for a short time. If you liked Pushing Daisies, you'll probably like this show.

2. Hero and House of Flying Daggers... neither of which are Japanese, but both beautiful and epic

3. To Catch a Thief and the original Pink Panther (not the Steven Martin one) are both pretty good old school heist movies

4. You Can't Take it With You is one of my favorite movies of all time. It's got a quirky sense of humor, although I'm not sure it falls into any of the categories you've got listed there.

You've probably already seen all of these movies. You're a hard one to recommend movies to since you've seen almost as many as I have.

Anderson was heavily influenced by the French New Wave. So films by François Truffaut (The 400 Blows) and Jean Luc Godard (Breathless) would be great, relatively cheap, films to pick up.

Also Anderson's protégé, Noah Baumbach, made a great film in The Squid and the Whale.

Additionally, many of the landscape and wide shots in The Life Aquatic were done by Francis Ford Coppola's son, Roman Coppola. His feature length, CQ, is also really good.

Also along these lines is the lesser known film The Cook, The Thief, His Wife and Her Lover.

Hope these help!

I had to respond to your request for any 80's movie with unicorns. :)

The Last Unicorn
Unico
Wildfire
She-ra
Legend
Rainbow Brite

Check out "The World of 80's Unicorns!" at http://unico_02.tripod.com/ Wow - it's amazing what you find using Google.

As for an epic, don't forget Gone with the Wind - one of my favorites

Thanks for the suggestions. Here is what I went with:

The Last Unicorn
Serenity
Firefly: Complete Series
Wonderfalls: Complete Series
CQ
Paranoid Park

I also would like to say that I may never shop at Best Buy again. I can never find anything I want in the store. Four of the movies above I had to order online.

I am looking forward to watching some of the recommended movies. I will let you know what I think.
